Hello, i recently formatted a computer and i am putting windows 98 second edition back onto it. when i run the installer, it goes thru scandisk fine, but once it says its loading the install program it gets to 100%, and then a little black box appears and everything is frozen. nothing i've tried has helped, i've used diff cd's to install and i've formatted it two more times since then. Any ideas?? thanks for any help.

Suggestion 1
Remove all unnecessary hardware during install (sound, network, modem cards, zip sdrives, CD writers).

Suggestion 2 (its an also)

If more than one memory stick, just install with one (swap them if one fails).

Sorry, wolluf, but you missed this one! ;-) Oh well, after all of the good advice you give, it had to happen sometime!!

HSTech - This is caused by your BIOS level anti-virus. Simply go into your CMOS Setup and disable it.

At this point in the installations, the windows setup is trying to access your boot sector. As a result, the BIOS level boot sector protection is trying to warn you with a box--but the windows installer is fighting it, causing a lock-up. Mudskipper

wolluf - BTW, you think like I do--when in doubt, rip all of the hardware out!! LOL Mudskipper

well caught mudskipper, I'll try reading the post more attentively and THINKING before going into the 'pull it all out' routine, next time! - (if my brain can remember that)

I have the same problem but the BIOS anti-V has been disabled. Still hangs up. I extracted all the cab and inf files to a temp. directory in C:\ from my start up CD. Ran setup from C:\(temp) and all went ok. Now I still have freeze up problems but I also upgraded from 64MB mem to 256Mb of mem.. I'm thinking like WOLLUF that the mem. is the problem.
Hope some of my problems helps you.

hey thanks everyone, turning off the virus protection in the BIOS worked. thanks so much.
