Hi guys im really baffled by the problem i am having i hope you guys can give a clue into what is going on.

I got hired to put a small network at a hotel of 4 computers
so that they all have internet connection. They had someone else configure their network and it was told to me that all was working fine for a few days and stopped working a few days before they got me

( by the way they asked me to do it, cause their previous tech stold almost all parts off their new asuz computer and took off, sad i know makes us all look bad)

Well this is where the problem is: they have a d-link router DI 704P. and i can only get a connection to the other computer by using port 3 and 4, but not on 1 and 2.
I mean any computer can get internet access by using 3 and 4 only.

What could be the possible causes for this to be happening?
guys i am really new to this so i would really appreciate any and all help. thanks guys.

Luis.

Or the router has just 2 ports configured ...

Cheers,

I was just looking for that online & it appears there is no way to turn off ports for that device. If using the same computers & cables proves that ports 1 & 2 do not work, I would agree that it's a problem with the router.

Hi guys thanks for your replies, i am sorry i did not reply sooner but i was working on this issue and could not get back sonner.

Well You guys are all right! The router is the problem, i also found all the information about that specific router SMAH and i seen the samething, you cannot turn off ports.
(so i thank you for that very accurate reply)

I asked them a few more questions since it was working Saturday night and then Sunday morning there was no internet connectivity. Well there was a very bad storm Sunday and as you guys know when you don't have the router plugged in to the surge protector it, those two ports got damaged along with an old hub that they had there.

So the problem is that port 1 and 2 are no longer any good.
i just told them not to spend the money on a new router when they are going to set up ann internet connection to 30 of their hotel rooms

thanks guys your help was really appreciated.
