New to Citrix, so please forgive me with this one...

I'm trying to install the Citrix client onto a new workstation here at the office, and when I launch Program Neighborhood and login to my Citrix server, the entire desktop appears! What's the point of publishing apps if my users can simply navigate to them using Start/Programs once they login to the Citrix server?

This is acting more like PCAnywhere instead of a terminal server. What am I doing wrong here? Please.

You have published the entire desktop rather than selected specific applications for the user to access.

Hmmm...if I did, I don't see it. My "test" user has only been given rights to mspaint.exe in the Published App Manager (since this is an experiment).

I sat down in front of the Citrix server and logged on as my test user "test". It takes me to the desktop, as I would expect. This is what I'm seeing when I connect to it via Citrix.

I guess my real desire here is to figure out how to have only "mspaint" appear in my ICA Client's Program Neighborhood when they open it, rather than the server's desktop just as if they were sitting in front of it. Am I explaining this adequately? It's hard to ask the proper question when you're not sure what's going on.

Hi, when you're setting up your ICA client connection, at the screen where you have two radio buttons, one for "Server" and one for "Published Application" which one are you selecting?

This should be "Published Application". I don't have the Citrix client software in front of me, but also on this screen, to the right and below the "Published Application" button, there's an additional button to click, here's where you put in the I.P. address of your Citrix server.

After that, you'd tick the "Published Application" radio button, then click the drop down arrow and you should see your published app if you've set it up correctly at the server.

What version of Windows ( I presume it's a Windows server ) is your Citrix Server?

Is it just one server we're talking about here? Let me know how you get on.

Ahhh, now you're referring to things I've come across while trying to figure this out.

When I launch the ICA client's Program Neighborhood, it immediately prompts me to login to the Citrix server (which is indeed a 2000 server, to answer your question). I have to cancel this login in order to get back to the Program Neighborhood, where I see "Application Set Manager". Opening this gives me:

Find New Application Set
Custom ICA Connections
Citrix1 Farm

Choosing "Custom ICA Connections" is what takes me to where you're referring. When I choose "published application", I can indeed see all the apps that I've configured in my Published App Manager. I can create an icon for each of them, if I so desire. I'm then able to right-click and create a desktop shortcut.

Is that the way this is supposed to work? If so, that's fine...however, if you recall from the beginning of my reply here, I mentioned that when Program Neighborhood is launched it immediately prompts you for your username/password to log you in to Citrix. If my users enter their credentials at this point, they have full access to the server's desktop. This is what I'd like to get rid of.

By the way, thanks to everyone who's taking the time to reply to this. It's helping a great deal.

I follow what you're describing alright, but it's tricky for me to envision in my head without a Citrix client in front of me.

You're best bet is to delete everything at the client ( that wouldn't be there by default, such as Citrix1Farm etc. ) and start over.

Also, I forgot to mention, when putting in the server I.P. address, before clicking the "Published application" radio button and clicking next, you'll probably want to select TCP/IP as the protocol, as opposed to http/https. for some reason the client software defaults to this

Yeah, I also noticed that too. Easy enough to work around.
What I've started doing here for new Citrix connections is creating custom ICA connections for each published application, and then creating desktop shortcuts for them. Doing this allows my users to launch the app without having to open up the client's Program Neighborhood. (although I'm then relegated to only using the boring ICA icon, and not the icon for the app they're using!)

There is one thing that's running on some of my machines that I find interesting and can't seem to duplicate on my laptop here. When I open Program Neighborhood, I can see shortcut icons for the published apps. I have no idea how they got there. If I launch one of them, I'm prompted to login to the Citrix server. I can't figure out how those icons got there, since there's no connection to Citrix prior to double-clicking the icon.

Thanks again,

There's an option/tick box when you're creating the published app that allows you to create an icon for the published app in the user's Start Menu. This may be what you're seeing there

Yeah, I tried that, but that wasn't it. I'm really stumped with this one. I guess it's no big deal really, as I can just create shortcuts for each of my custom connections to the user's desktop. It would be nice to be able to use the icon for the actual published app, though.
