Why does saving take so long?

I have pictures linked to the document and not embeded. I thought this should speed up the save time. Unfortunately, I was wrong. I am trying to come to grips with the fact that Freehand will be replaced by Illustrator as a result of Adobe purchasing Macromedia. I am not an Illustrator basher and use both programs frequently. The save time is something that has always puzzled me. Is there a way to speed things up?

...importing the pictures the size you need helps, other than that, not a lot other than buying a quicker computer, more ram etc, etc...

...i have my doubts about freehand replacing illustrator entirely, freehand needed a revamp after version 8, since then, it could never match illustrators capabilities, especially with spot colors...

We purchased both Illustrator and Freehand at the same time. Illustrator was using version 88 and Freehand was at version 1.0. This was obvious a long time ago in computer years. The first color mac had just come out (the Mac II) and my father had hired me to learn how to use it. Boy, those were the days. It wasn't until Freehand had upgraded to 3.0 that Adobe upgraded from 88. It didn't seem like Illustrator was going anywhere. So, naturally I went with the software that I thought was going to provide support. Quite honestly I have feel both pieces of software have strenghths and weeknesses. I feel the Freehand is extremely fast has ways to accomplish most tasks without ever taking your hands off of your mouse--not even for a shortcut. I feel that Illustrator is much more feature rich in most areas--with a few exceptions of course. I don't know how Illustrator has survived as long as it has without multiple pages and the ability to colorize tiffs. Really, I am only preparing for a future as an Illustrator user. I really am not trying to bash the software. However, I feel with this issue as I do with PC users that bash Mac. Unless someone spends a lot of time dealing in both worlds don't bash. I do most of my speed work in Freehand and most of my "after effects" in Illustrator.
