we are working at a small newspaper and just upgraded from OS 9 to panther and from quark 4 to 6.5. we are using it with suitcase and we had a bunch of corrupt fonts that we just took off the computer though. anyway, quark and other applications sometimes unexpectedly quit even when we are away from the computer. somebody was saying it had to do with the fonts.
does anybody know if that what it is or why it does it? or is that just OS 10??

Suitcase may be scanning through your fonts while you are doing other things. Maybe a particular font is damaged and causing this hiccup. This would normally make Suitcase crash rather than Quark though.

Quark 6.5 updated on Windows XP:

We had version 6.0 on the XP machines, then we ran the update for 6.5, however an error came up during installation and said we needed the 6.1 disk. Luckily, we had it and the installation continued and completed without a hitch.

Our problem now is that whenever one of the XP users opens up Quark, it displays this error message:

"The activation file for this copy of QuarkXPress has been corrupted. You will need to reinstall this copy of QuarkXPress."

What should I do and how should I go about doing it? Thanks.

Crenzi:

If you had corrupt fonts that you removed from OSX, you could still have the caches for those fotns. OSX relies on caches rather than the original font so as to avoid corruption of the orignal. Go to versiontracker.com and search for Font Finagler and download it. It will clean the various caches from the machines. It should be run as a utility about once a week if you use a lot of fonts as it not only cleans corupted caches but also keeps the machine clean of too many caches, which really can slow performance.

A number of people have experienced problems with Helvetica when using Q6X, with and without Suitcase. Try disabling it abd see if that helps.

If you're having other apps quit while in the background, you might be running into some RAM problems. You should have at least 1 gig of ram in the machines when running the various graphics apps.
