Why does QT filesize not shrink after cutting?

Hi,

I'm trying to edit unwanted scenes from a quicktime movie, using QuicktimePlayer Pro 7.0.2, under Mac OS 10.3.

The editting all goes fine. I'm deleting about 3/4 of a 500 Mb movie. But when I "Save as" (self-contained), I end up with a file that displays only the remaining parts of the movie, but has *exactly* the same filesize as the original movie (according to the Finder as well as QT's "Movie Info").

Can anyone tell me why this is happening, and more importantly, how to get rid of unwanted scenes AND the disk space they take up?
