Why does not my microphone work?

I'm going nuts (again!).

I had a logitec web cam working that had a nice built-in microphone. It was perched on top of my monitor when I accidentally yanked the USB cord and it fell to the desk. When I placed it back in its perch, the video worked but the audio did not (still does not). My audio output works fine, however.

Do I need to buy another one? This is a USB device that does both audio and sound input and output without a head set.

I have a headset with a microphone so I tried that out. This is not a USB unit: just analog. When I plug it in, I can hear the audio from my speakers and the ear piece but the microphone on this is not working either!

So why is this? I think there is something I need to turn on to enable the microphone!

What is it? I'm running Windows XP 2003 SP2.
Thanks,
Siegfried

Right Click on Vol control in tray.
Left Click on options.
Make sure Mick is turned on.

If it is ON, uncheck and reboot, then Check it on again and see if it works then.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

microphone not working in xp

Shucks! That did not work.
When I go to the tray, I see a "mixer" which has volume control.

I guess I have two mixer devices?

I have "C-Media Wave Device" according to the drop down. This has a checkbox for the "Microphone" and it is checked and I have rebooted.

I also a "HD Audio Renderer" -- what is this? This does not have a checkbox for the microphone.

When I bought the computer they were having problem with the motherboard integrated sound module so they put sound daughter card in.

That is still in the machine. I've tried plugging my microphone into both the integrated jack and the sound card jack with no luck.

I am getting sound from the integrated sound card because that is what my speakers are plugged into.

I also have this web cam plugged in the USB port whose video is working! The microphone built into the webcam was working and is no longer working.

How can I experiment with enabling/disabling the sound card to see if that is the problem?
Thanks,
Siegfried

I made an error in my post above, try this one.

Left Click on Vol control in tray.
Left Click on options.
Click on Properties
Make sure Mic is turned on.

Have you got a friend who will let you test your microphones out on their machine? At the moment it is hard to be certain whether your problem is faulty Windows or faulty hardware.

As far as the Webcam is concerned that should be listed in the dropdown menu, together with any other recording devices, found here -

Control Panel/ Sounds And Audio Devices/ Audio/ Sound Recording

If it is not listed there, then just to confound things further you may have driver problems.

If you're trying to use the headset microphone after having been using the one built into the Logitech webcam, you will need to specifically select this microphone. Goto Control Panel, then Sound and Audio Device Properties, select the Audio tab, half way down under Sound Recording, select the appropriate microphone.

ROGER,
Why doe I see only to sound recording devices? One is "C-Media Wave Device" and the other is blue tooth?

I don't have blue tooth installed on this machine (although, at one time, I may have had a blue tooth adapter installed).

I have the motherboard resident sound module (which is working for sound output), a sound blaster daughter card, and the audio microphone provided by the USB web cam. So I should see 4 sound recording devices and I only see two. What do I have to do to see the other ones?

Thanks,
siegfried

Have you tried disabling the BlueTooth sound device on any Properties via Device Manager/ Sound Video and Game Controllers?

Seems like the Soundblaster card may not be installed correctly, or have the correct drivers loaded. You said, "When I bought the computer they were having problem with the motherboard integrated sound module so they put sound daughter card in.". And you went on to state, "I am getting sound from the integrated sound card because that is what my speakers are plugged into.".!!

Yoiks! Sounds like you are trying to use half of one system and half of the other! I think I would try to do one of the following:-

1. Uninstall the Soundblaster software and remove the Soundblaster card. Reboot system and troubleshoot the on-board C-Media sound device. If possible, use this device for both recording (microphone) and playback (speakers or headset).

or

2. Completely disable the on-board C-Media device (in the BIOS). Uninstall both C-Media and Soundblaster software, reboot, then reinstall the Soundblaster software, and get this card alone to provide sound input and output.

Do as Linney suggests and disable the BlueTooth sound device.
