WHY DOES MY COMPUTER LOCK UP WHEN I SIMPLY OPEN PUBLISHER 2000

I CAN OPEN ANY OTHER PROGRAM INCLUDING ALL OTHER OFFICE PROGRAMS WITH NO PROBLEM MY COMPUTER RUNS FINE HOWEVER WHEN I OPEN PUBLISHER MY SYSTEM LOCKS INSTANTLY AND I HAVE TO HARD BOOT MY SYSTEM......CAN ANYONE HELP?????
