Why does IE side bar keep closing when I go to new site?

I had to close my virus programs for a short time the other day. When I went back into IE the side bar(either fav's or search) closes when I click on a site. Very frustrating. I know something got onto the computer and I've been running my anti-virus programs. But it still does it. What can I do?
