This is something that has been bothering me for some time, that black video used as filler at the beginning or end of a film in premiere appears far from black when compared to the black of a still black image. What causes this? and is there any way to improve the definition of 'black' video?

Its quite annoying to see a nice deep black frame within the premiere monitor turn to a dull grey when viewed full screen as an avi.

Are other black things on the screen appearing as black, too?

In other words, have you ruled out miscalibration of your monitor?

Ah i didn't consider my monitor being the problem, but that is quite possible, will give it a try. I'm using PAL.
Will get back to you...

If you are using PAL, the monitor sounds a very likely culprit. NTSC has a restricted colour space that might have been relevant.

Putting 'PAL test card' into Google will give you some suitable images that will help with the calibration.

Thank you i will try that out! cheers for that one Akribie
