Why does Arcserve tell me my DAT drive is offline ?

Im running NT4 server my tapes wont backup yet it detects the DAT drive. NT Hardware says the DAT drive is working properly..... YET..I cant backup, it takes ages to run through its backup proccedure.
Id like to know if OFFLINE means "Hey im knackered...replace me or am I missing something please..anyone ...?

How do I set it to ONLINE.....

The only way I have been able to online an offline DAT is to reboot.
