i telnet into my linux machine from a windows box using a program called termlite that is supplied by SCO and emulates a pc console. I've noticed that when I log in to the linux box as I change directories the text colors change. THats ok until it becomes a dark blue that these bifocalled eyes have a heck of a time reading. Anyone know what causes the colors to change like that? And can I stop it?

Yes, the BASH prompt, which is what most Linuxes use as their terminal program, supports listing directories and files in different colors, based on file and directory permissions. Sometimes PC telnet clients render these colors a little differently, which is why that blue seems so dark. Actually it is the "ls" program that does this color display, and there are ways to turn of colors, or change them into colors you prefer.

If you go to there is a link at the bottom to a "Tip Library" topic about the bash prompt, which explains how to customize your terminal:
