Why do I see white areas around my graphic images?

Another newbie question: I created a logo with graphical elements on multiple layers. When I save the image to an EPS file, and that file is opened up in Fireworks (or Freehand), white blocks appear in the background surrounding some parts of the logo. The rest of the background is transparent, like it should be. I don't see these white blocks in Illustrator when I'm working on the file, and I don't know where they came from. Any ideas?

Well, I figured out that when I make gaussian blurs, the blur extends past the edges of the logo to make these blocks. Is there any way to clip or mask the blocks?

...what settings are you using in the 'document raster effects settings'?

...this is under the effects menu...
