For both Windows 7 and Windows XP, taskbar buttons appear in sequence of opening that software. I've got Windows 7 set to not combine unless the taskbar is full, meaning that it looks much like Windows XP did. (Except that it puts buttons for the same software next to each other, but that's not a problem.)
With Excel, and Excel alone, I have found that if I have one spreadsheet open and open another, both will sometimes jump to the end of the list of buttons. I've not seen any other software do this, and it does not always happen.
In Windows XP, I could avoid this by opening a second copy of Excel. This no longer works.
I currently have Excel 2010, part of a general upgrade we had. With Windows XP it was Excel 2002.
It's an irritant because I frequenly need a large number of taskbar buttons open when testing software that I have developed. And to have them arranged in an order that makes sense to me and has related functions next to each other, maybe in two rows. Excel's behaviour disrupts the pattern.
