Why do data network guys think they are better than voice network guys?

Every time I have to work with a network guy, they always act like they are smarter than me because they know Cisco. It just so happens I know Cisco as well and often have to point out to them where they are wrong. When I try to give them a lesson on NARS BARS their eyes glaze over and they walk away saying things like, that's just stupid. Even though every time they have a telecom connectivity issue on a router like a PRI or H323 trunk, I'm always forced to look for the trouble on the telecom side before they will lift a finger to check their gear or they go running off to their manager to complain. It usually turns out to be a config error on their side. I've noticed for the last 20 years they think their poop doesn't stink. Why is this and how can I better combat their arrogance?

Don't you know, it's never the network fault and voice packets shouldn't be traversing their precious data circuit, slowing down their web browsing.

All joking aside, you're going to run into this, I see it both ways. Both are insecure about the other intruding into each other territory and in some cases figure it out and be better at it.

No point in trying to combat it.. I just fall back on the thought that (at least in the company I work for at the moment) if the data network is down no-one really gives a monkey, but as soon as there's a voice issue everyone cares...

It's not getting any smarter out there. You have to come to terms with stupidity, and make it work for you.

I believe the network guys think that telephony is a dead art and they are the wave of the future.

Also, most pure network guys do not understand telephony or converged networks or QoS or frequency at all.

I have been doing telephony for 40 years and dialup/DSL for twenty years, and I have discovered most network guys aren't really network guys but they are more Microsoft or Ubuntu, or C++ guys and when I start asking them about transport programming or even WAN/LAN they really don't understand past their local network devices...sad, really.
