Why did my backup fail?

Hi,
I'm using Veritas Backup Exec 8.60 on a Win2000 server.
Each week I do a full backup of all important servers on our network, and it almost always finishes with no problems. However, today the backup is marked as "Completed...Failed" in the Activity Monitor tab.
When I looked at the Job Output, I didn't see anything that really stood out as a failure.

I ran a diff between a previous successful job and this failed one, and still didn't see much difference. The only thing I saw that was different between the two is this:
Directory not found. Can not backup directory \WUTemp and its subdirectories.

Both logs have some lines that say:
"The item filename in use - skipped."
and
"Unable to open the item filename - skipped."
and
"RSM Database cannot be backed up because the Removable Storage service is not running."

So is it just those "Directory not found" errors that caused the job to be marked as "Failed"?

I believe so.

I used to get annoying errors like that all the time
while supporting clients that used 8.6

I used to daily go thru the job log and compare with
the previous to see what data changed.

I found a cheap veritas 9.0 install license on eBay
and was able to upgrade the system i was having weird
errors on like the one you've explained.

Version 9 on up is also the reason why i built my own
application that can monitor remote instances of BE.

8.6 uses some sort of file based database... if it messes
up you have to pretty much start from scratch install.
