Why can't I use a standard Vista font in Word?

Just bought a new laptop with Vista pre-installed, and have noticed a rather strange problem.

One of the new fonts available through Vista is Estrangelo Edessa. I like it. But for some reason, I can't use it in Word. I can select the font from the list, but as soon as I start typing, it automatically shifts to something else - usually Verdana.

I thought maybe this was down to me using Word 2002 instead of Word 2007. But I'm also using Excel 2002, and it doesn't have a problem with EE.

I can even use the font in Notepad. Just not in Word!

Anyone have any suggestions? It's hardly a life or death problem, but kind of annoying.

It's probably just a matter of Installing the font.

Go to Control Panel; Appearance and Personalization; Fonts
find the font and Install.

If I am not mistaken, this is one of those Syriac fonts - right to left script. But, I have been wrong before.

I have de-installed and re-installed the font several times, with no luck.

It's a normal left to right font.

I can use it in every single application within Vista that allows you to choose a font, except Word.

Weird.

Hi Sielah,

Hmm, that font works for me with Word 2000.

After de-installin', did to make sure the font had been deleted before re-installing? If not, and the font remained on your system, I suspect you may have simply de-activated and re-activated a corrupt font file.

Have you installed a local printer driver and set it as Windows default? I guess not from the above. Word MUST see a local printer driver in order (amongst many other needs) to find out which font types the printer will accept. If there is no printer driver, then Word only uses a few system default fonts.

I have a local printer installed and set to default. I print stuff all the time.

I have also realized today that the problem is not limited to this one font. There are a whole load of other fonts that Word will not allow me to use either.

The annoying thing is that these fonts all came with Vista, and I can't use them, whereas free fonts that I download from all over the Internet work just fine.

So here's another weird thing.

I opened the Character Map tool, selected the Estrangelo Edessa font, then copied a character in to Word, and the font came through just fine. I can then happily type away in EE.

But if I delete everything I've written in EE, the font problem 'resets', and I'm back to square one.

It's only Word that has this problem.

I tried the fix in this link, but it didn't work. Still happening.

It's not a huge issue now I've discovered the Character Map shortcut.

What's weird is that even when I can use the font by copying from Character Map, it doesn't look the same as when used in other apps. The spacing is a wee bit messed up, and it's not as smooth or elegant looking as usual.
