OK..Here is my problem I recently just finish building two win2000 servers..using active directory i created a domain called "matrix" now whenever I try to make the other server join the domain it just will not do it...I get an error message that reads something like"The RPC server is aunavailable" ...Now i checked to see if the service was started and it was on automatic and running on both PC's...I also tried just joining the two without active directory by just trying to change from a workgroup to a domain from the identification area but that wouldn't work either...

Hve you created an account on the DC for the server inquestion. I am assuming you are using a DC (Domain Controller). If you have created an account on the DC can the servers PING each other? Are the subnets the same? Are you using DHCP or static IP?

Sorry for the questions, these will help us find a solution for you.

Yes i did create an account for the second server in the domain controller folder in ADS server management...That's the funny thing both servers can ping each other and i can see the second server in the network neighborhood but it won't join the same domain...The subnets are the same and we are using atatic ip's..Thanx butchrecon ...

Are you getting as far as "Enter the user name and password of an account with permission to join the domain"? if so does it stop right afterword or take a while. If not how are you trying to join the domain?

OK...I DID GET TO THAT PART WHERE IT PROMPTS ME TO ENTER THE USER NAME THAT HAS THE RIGHT TO LET THIS COMPUTER JOIN THE DOMAIN...I MADE SURE THAT I THE ADMINISTRATORS PERMISSION TO DO THIS...THE ERROR MESSAGE IS "CAN'T FIND NETWORK PATH"...I ALSO TRIED DOING IT THROUGH ACTIVE DIRECTORY AND THAT WHEN I GET THAT "RPC SERVER IS NOT AVAILABLE" ERROR MESSAGE...

Do you have IP addresses and names input inyo yhe HOSTS file? Other than that I am unsure what is causing that error. I have never come across that. I apologize. Any one else have any IDEAS?

Grasping at straws-
DNS server could be the problem. If server1 is a DNS server as well, make sure server2 is using its DNS. If server1 is not a DNS server, you may need to make it one.

THANKS YOU GUYS...BUT I FIGURED IT OUT...AND IT WAS THE DNS SETTINGS..THE FIRST SERVER'S DNS SETTINGS WERE A LITTLE OFF AND I TOOK CARE OF IT...

I had the exact same problem and I found the solution though this thread. Thanks everybody!

Well after countless tries and failures here's how it's done. Once you create your domain controller, you must have all of your DNS settings setup right, all you have to do after that is go into the tcp/ip proporties and point the member server to the dns server's ip..after that you just run dc promo and you'll be fine....now it's time to work on group policies...thanx everyone
