I have tried numerous times to upgrade to XP SP2 with no luck. I have a legal copy and still no luck. I have also tried to install a third party App that fails to register an OCX component. Is this due to the fact that I can't upgrade to SP2? This is rather urgent so any news is good news!

Oh and BTW I have tried to manually register that OCX file with no luck either.

Is it possible that you don't have enough hard drive space? That is what happened to me.

That is not the case. Hard Drive space is a plenty.

Surely you're receiving an error message(s) during the failed installs...

I guess the first thing to ask is, can you download it? How far do you get in the process? About 3-4 months ago I know you could order SP2 on CD from Microsoft absolutley free (no shipping or anything), maybe try getting it from them on a CD. What sort of messages are you getting that tell you that you are unsuccessfully updating?

I have a CD copy of SP2 and failed there as weel. The error message was vanilla and not one error code or anything. Just that SP2 failed to install. Oh how much fun is this.

I'm running out of ideas. Have you went to Windows update and updated everything? Maybe there is something else you have to update before putting SP2 on. Just a suggestion, this one is making me scratch my head...

This was a commecnt posted to me from the boys over at expert-exchange. This is most like the Answer and solution.

You most likely have a spyware or virus infection that is not removed. No single spyware products cannot detect more than about 40% of current known spyware. No two-prduct combination was able to detect even 3/4 of known spyware. Removal often fails, or succeeds but leaves a "sleeper" agent that reinstalls the same infection on the next restart.

Install and run both the Microsoft anti-spyware product and Ad-Aware, this was about as good a 2-product combination as any (it was actually #2, 1% behind #1, but the #1 combination was not free). Run them in safe mode. Run a virus scan also.

In your Windows folders will be the Service Pack logs which may contain information that might be helpful.
Locate the Windows XP SP2 Setup log files. The Setup program logs information about the Windows XP SP2 installation to the following log files: • Setupapi.log • Svcpack.log.

Repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates (no problem if you substitute them with SP2) but your files and programs will be untouched.
