Why can't I do the following?

<% String myHost = request.getRemoteHost() %>
<div id="header"><h1><span>MyJAVA</span></h1>
<h2>Welcome it is now: <%= date %></h2>
<h2>Your are contacting us from server <%= myHost %></h2>
