I am just getting started in flash 5 and am trying to create a flash navigation bar for use on an HTML web page. I have created a number of button symbols but when I go to the actions panel all of the actions-including the geturl action- are greyed out. I can still assign actions to frames in the normal timeline, but not within the button symbols. What gives

why can't I assign actions to buttons?

Sounds like you are enteringb the actions panel from a keyframe.
right click on the actual button and the select actions...it will not be greyed out.
If that does not work then make sure your button is an actual Button symbol in the library. Ya' Gotta Love It!

Double-clicking a keyframe on the timeline, opens up the Frame Actions window (check the window's title!), while selecting the button on stage, and right-clicking it will bring up a popup menu in which you should select actions. This will open the Object Actions window where the on action won't be grayed out, and where you should be able to add scripts to your buttons.
As Tulsa has suggested, also make sure the symbol (right-click the symbol in the Library and hit behavior) has a button's behavior in the Library... Although that should be easily identified by the pointing finger icon in the Library.

Sorry Demis if I came across as being a little harsh, just offering some help if you need it. Don't get many places as good as here to find out what you need to know and get that little bit of information you need..... funkymonk B-)

hi
in flash 5 it is not possible to add frame actions
inside button symbols.
you first design the button.
in the main time line right-click the button symbol open actios tab
and add a mouse action to that.
(on rollOver,etc.)
then you can assign whatever actions you want.
