Why can't I add tables from multi databases into 1 catalog?

I am using Impromptu 7.0. I tried to add some tables from another database (another ODBC resource) into a existing catalog, I didn't get any errors, but the "ADD" button is always greyed out. Why?

Thanks for any feedbacks!

one catalog, one database (data source)... isnt it???

sudhi

Impromptu catalogs Only allow 1 database connection.

The way around this is to use hotfiles or connect to the second database through the first one i.e. link tables from both databases into access.

A better way around this is to use database links, if your datasource supports them.

You are witnessing one of the chief complaints about Impromptu. Dave Griffin's idea presents an interesting work-around.

Sometimes the grass is greener on the other side because there is more manure there - original.

There have also been a couple of threads here that suggest you can use Access as an intermediary, by creating 'link' tables to different ODBC sources, and then adding the Access tables to an Impromptu catalog. Supposedly it allows you to use widely different datasources. I haven't tried it, and I suspected that you would still be prompted for the DSN passwords, but others here seemed to indicate that they made it work. It may be worth a try.

I had a similar problem some time ago. I had use an Access DB with a DB2. I set up an ODBC into Access for the DB2 tables. Then I used the Access db for the catalog.

Hope this helps.

If you have a 3rd party ODBC connection, you may find it is possible to connect to 2 or more databases of the same type as part of the ODBC set up, an example being the Openlink ODBC connection to Progress DBs.
