Ok, problem here. My Flash site is like 130kbs. It takes for ever to download, i just tested it on my dial up. Great on my cable but dial up is another story. I have a feeling that even a preloader wont fix this, and i have tried decreasing the jpg's down to 9 or 8 kb each, which is not bad, probably can just a tad more but what is wrong here?
i know someone will ask for the link so here it is, you know how it is about showing something that dont work!

Any suggestions? Thanks everyone!!!!!

Why? Because I can't get a cable connection! I have cable, but you need a digital tv cable to be able to use a cable modem... And not enough demand in the neighbourhood, I guess! Can't even get a fast dial-up service until now for the same reasons.
As for your link, seems to be another problem. It stops about halfway through! 130kbs ain't that much and usually wouldn't take me more than 30 secs to download, which is acceptable to me, until I can experience a cable connection!
A preloader probabbly wouldn't change anything except from showing me off a partial site while it downloads and ends up jamming up.
Can you upload this on another server?

;-)

natadia that loads fine for me( cable)..however on the first doenload the main page seems to be jumpy or loading something else on top of each other? didn't know if you knew!

ah the power of cable! :)

if i had to go back to dial up i would just not go!

Try this one and see how bad it loads? Thanks for checking it out, i spent some hours on this thing and want to get it uploaded and done with!
Please let me know if it took for ever or upload probs still, may have to work some more bugs out..
How can you test Flash in IE 4.0????

No offense, but it looks like you haven't used enough symbols to reduce the size of it...I could probably have that thing down to 50k easy...try using a little bit more organization...do you have any extra tweens?, or extra things in your library?...that could help bring it down some.

Took about 34 seconds connected at 45,333 bps this morning... Which to me, is fine. As I said, a catchy preloader, might help in the sense that it allows you to download the whole thing before I see anything, and when it does come up, I'm ready to go! As you have it now, the site (movie) is slowly building in front of me and nothing is operative till the whole thing as downloaded.

;-)

WHITETIGER: Well I have used as many symbols more than once to keep the timing down. The buttons are all the same, got one BG image that takes up like 3 or 4 kb, the txt is just text except for the RED colored headers for each section, each is a few kb, but last night i took all the images out and put them back in my editor and decreased them more than they were, the images are about 8 to 9 kb each. Oh you mentioned that if i have a bunch of unneeded tweens, will that extra stuff in the library increase the size????

Oldnewbie:
That is better than what i got, i sat there for 4 minutes until i seen the header pop up. Oh, got to work! Thanks for all the advise!

natedeia: Well, you also have some hidden things behind those bottom pics on the main page, I can see 'em...you have some text behind it...might try getting rid of that.
And from my experience, the extra stuff in the library for me has always increased file size...but I'm not TOTALLY sure about that...that site shouldn't be too large tho...

if there are extra things in the library that are not being used it causes the file size to be bigger? that makes no sense! it should only be counting instances and tweens that make up the time line(or the actual movie).when you publish it doesn't publish your library it publishes the instances and tweens that make up the movie. atleast that is what i thought.seems to me like natedeia made that text effect for the templet in photoshop or whatever..with that text effect,(maybe bevel emboss)and the emboss that you used on the templet, that is where i feel your size is coming from..i learned my lesson about trying to add effects in other programs and bringing them into flash(it doesn't work)..i guarentee you take those out and try to do similar effects with flash for your templet the size will drop in half, maybe more..

have a look at this..

4 scenes all done in flash all instances uses 4 times..
the background was done in photoshop saved as med res jpg..
brought it in and used it 4 times only changing the color by adjusting the primarys in the advanced effect panel..

35k ... once i add my text and a few other things my size will still be under 60/70 k..

you know natedeia you can stll get that effect of bevel emboss with flash..it really looked nice that way..if you thought about it long enough i'm sure you could come up with a similar effect.

I do believe everything in your library is stored in the flash file...correct me one of you experts if I'm wrong...maybe I'll do a test...but it does use them I believe...I'll get back later on that.

i just had a file that was 11k..added a jpg that was 40 k..deleted the jpg from the timeline(though it was in the library)..tested movie was still at 11k..

Yea, thanks for that Virt2001...but also, I noticed she had some extra things in the background there behind some of her images...also some things could be there that you dont even know about...that's why I had thought of that before...because once I didn't realize I had something in my movie that had been jackin up the file size.
