I'v been looking to convert my ide based ultra machine to scsi.
However I've noticed that the cards that sun sell are way overpriced and not fast in comparison to the price.
For example sun have released a SE single scsi(40mb) card for around $200.
However for $150 you can get a card based on the symbios chip, that supports LVD, UW3, and also has a 50pin connection and does 80mb.
Surely this would seem like a more apt choice then sun's own products in general.
Is there any real reason why sun are such a rip off.
Another example, crucial sell memory for sun systems that are roughly the same price as PC memory.
This is the only annoying thing about sun and solaris, they require a there own expensive hardware. You wonder why business is not as good as it used to be.

Anyone know if adaptec stuff will work with solaris 8.
thx

I think its because they can right now, although this may change soon. Thier disks, memory, controllers are nuts. Has anyone ever fired up Linux on a nice Dell Poweredge with a Perc raid controller?, works like a charm for a HUGE fraction of the price. I truly believe Linux is headed for good things, Sun's gonna have to get real.

YOu also could get cheaper gear, but risk SUn telling you you are not supported bc you didnt follow thier rules :)
