Why append to media? Is it possible for Backup Exec to read previous backups recorded on the same medium, and if so how?

Why append to media?

I append all the time because every night I run a series of jobs -- rather than "one big job" that does all the servers -- 'cuz if the one big job fails at any point; it is FAILED for the whole shooting match.
It's easier to pin down what went wrong if there are a bunch of smaller jobs, staggered in time...
the very first job of the night will be an over-write -- all subsequent jobs will be Append

Once media is overwritten, you cannot read the previous backup on the tape. Append is the only way to read the previous backups, AFAIK.
