I know who -r shows the run level, but what about the other fields ?

who -r
. run-level 3 Aug 4 07:55 3 0 S

Here the run level is 3, what does the date indicate and the 3 0 S what's that ?

Hi,
Date displaye the date the system is going up the current run level
S ( or other valid run level ) is the previous run level ( here Single user )
0 is the counter incremented every time the system is pushed to the current run level ( 0 means the 1st time )

Thanks... only the 0 wasn't clear, in what situations will it be not 0 ?

Hi,

If you run an init 4 ( the system is up in run level 4)
If again you run init 3 ( the system is again in run level 3, and the counter is incremented by 1, in this case who -r will display 3 1 4 insted of 3 0 S )
