We have a town government website, and have a website provider, who gave us a domain name that is in the .us domain.
We're considering maybe going to a different website provider, but would like to keep our exact same internet address.
We're wondering if our current provider may own our whole name, including the .us part, or part of it?
Is that something buyable?

Yes, it just depends on your agreement with your current provider. You might have paid for the registration yourselves (through the provider), or it might be included in their fee.

"whois yourdomain.us" will tell you who the registered owner and contacts are.
