Hi, Question:
My client needs to purchase a 60 dollar image from an image company for her web site and asked that I lay out the money and purchase it myself and then just add it to the invoice when I charge her for the site. Just wondering if that is standard procedure or is it ok to ask her to purchase it herself?? i don't really have the money to lay out right now but on the other hand I don't want to come across cheap...Thanks for any advice in advance!

Is the liscense on the picture one use only or will you be able to use it as much as you want after you purchase it?

I see nothing wrong with her request...( ex. Midas doesn't make you buy the muffler before putting it on your car.)

If you want her to pay the full purchase price of the image over and above whatever your fee is for the actual page with another image, you really should keep it exclusively for her site and not add it to your gallery of stock photos if it is ineed a multi-liscense photo.

I agree with moirakris. One other thought, if your contract/agreement states that the client provides the graphics (very common) then have your client sign a new contract for the purchase of the graphic(s). This may seem trivial for a $60.00 foto but a number of things happen with this document:

1. There is no question about who is ultimately responsible for the cost of the foto/graphic.
2. You can now invoice for the graphic and have an iron-clad legal basis for collection should the need arise. (There's no confusion about what was included in the original contract for the site.)
3. Ownership of the graphic is established immediately! You own it until your client pays for it.
4. It's just good business!
5. It makes it easier when your client asks you to do it again.
There's always a better way...

Thanks guys. I like the deposit idea. I'll guess I'll have to pay it out this time and be smarter next time.

If you will do the work for your client then you can charge her $70.00 for this photo. If she won't pay the $10.00 extra then you ask her friendly to purchase the photo immediately, because otherwise you can't continue the project. :)
