I build alot of Web applications working with Oracle 9i.
My DBA advised I was responsible for backing up my Database tables in my Schema and for recovering my data if ever needed in my own backups. I always thought the DBA was responsible for backing up and recovering any data I needed from the database. Please advise who should be doing the backup and recovery of data?

Actually, at the company I previously worked for, the Infrastructure team was responsible. They would do a nightly tape backup of the entire database. However, it was recommended that the developers also did a local copy of their database objects for the "just in case" scenario.

And I will admit, I needed my local copy a couple of times.

Sounds like you have a set of tables for your own use. The DBA will only restore the entire database. If you have tables that you are afraid will accidentally get wiped, and those tables are not worth restoring over everyone else's work, then you would want to export your schema every once in a while.

CleanAir,

Full-database backups ("physical backups") are typically the responsibility of the DBA. In many (if not most) organizations it is the responsibility of the DBA to also produce "logical backups" of database objects (i.e., exports).

In your case, it sounds as though stakeholders (meaning "you", not the DBA) are ultimately responsible for logical backups.

To ensure that the DBA is not slacking, I'd go to the Powers that Be, admit ignorance of the policy, and ask to see the policy in the operations manual that places responsibility on the stakeholders' shoulders.

The reason I am skeptical about your company's apparent policy is because I have never seen an organization where they expect users to conduct the rather technical task of performing logical backups of corporate information assets.
