I have a piece of software called NeoMonitor that details all the live TCP/IP connections and 'listening' ports. I ALWAYS seem to have a connection to

h0050ba4a45e0.ne.mediaone.net
24.218.44.89

on port 1055.

Digging around it seems to point towards some AT&T site or sowftware licencing site for ANSYS???

Can someone tell me how to disable or close down this connection from my PC?

Strange... I'm not sure, but I do know most cable modem's start with 24.

Are you using the Road Runner software installed on your system? Could be a port that's opened to make sure you system is authorized to connect to the RoadRunner network. I did a search on the IP Address and it looks like it could be owned to an Admin block at RoadRunner....

I am not aware that I am connected to any specific network service.

If I am running 'Road Runner' or some other authentication type software, does anyone know how I can identify it and DELETE it?

...just thought, I have a 'Gator.com' on-line shopping thingy floating around so I might try removing that.

Thanks,

Richibald

RoadRunner is a broadband provider (like @home WAS). Since I deal (well not any longer) with @Home I know they had software that you would load on your system custom for their network. I didn't know if you are on the RoadRunner network so I asked, if you were then that could explain the open port if you loaded the RoadRunner software. Since it sounds like you are NOT on RoadRunner then it looks like someone has an open connection to your system. Two things you can do at this point.

1. Monitor the connection to see what requests are hitting your system

or

2. Install a personal firewall like ZoneAlarm or Blackice.

I'm not familiar with Gator.com so I looked up the host name, it does not resolve to the 24.0.0.0 network but that does not mean it couldn't be that software. Disable the software then take a look at that port again to see if there is a connection. If there is no connection then enable the software again then check the port.

I would worry about any connection to my system that is not authorized by me, if you're on a broadband connection the risk even increases. Recommend one of the personal firewalls for your system to prevent anyone from connecting to your system.
