Who does the switching?

I have not asked a question for a long time but I'm trying to hold off trouble for a customer of mine. I'm 69 years old retired from AT$T after 40 years so I'm not a complete novice.

My question When my customer rolls the pots lines from a local telco to TWC thru an arris modem who actually does the call switching? Does that stay with the local co?

It is done by the new company as the old copper that the local company owns and operates will no longer manage the routing of the calls.

So the phone number will no longer reside in the original CO? How can TWC handle all the different prefixes? I realize it' VOIP but I guess I'm stuck in Tip and Ring days. Where can I find a good primer on VOIP?

It is more like who manages the number. Even with copper you could have service with Windstream but the copper last mile is owned by Centurylink. Depending where the call is coming from several companies may route it. Most of them are going to be turning it into VoIP at some point along the ride. Numbers them selves are pretty much virtual these days. Not tied to a physical exchange. Most info you will find on VoIP won't be at the carrier level. Best advice I can give there is Google it.
