Just a quick question, I have purchased a .co.uk domain name from a provider, who provide web forwarding. However, they wont forward ftp. Basically the DNS record on the web for my domain terminates at the company i purchased the DN off. I have nominet registrations that prove I own this domain, yet how do get the DNS records to point to my static IP and subsequently my FTP server. Is there acentral DNS body I can contact with proof of ownership who will change it for me

regards

The company that provided you with the domain name is also providing DNS for that name. That DNS record points to their server which is then set to forward http requests to your server's IP address. Some companies that provide the domain name will allow you to change the DNS records on thier server, and some do not. It sounds like you ended up with a 'do not'.

You have a few options. You could use one of the DNS services mentioned in this article or you could run your own DNS server locally. Either of these choices would require you to get the domain name provider to change the primary DNS server. The last option is to use a domain name service that allows you to change DNS records on their server. I use It's more expensive than some other services, but has added benifits that are worth the added cost in my opinion.
