whirring noise and no pc to boot

My Dell Dimension 9100 has decided to die i turn it on and i get a loud whiring and nothing else. I suspect the hard drive and would like to replace it but iam not sure of what to select and the compatibility issues. I have a Maxtor 250gb sata150 hdd and want a larger drive to store films any suggestions ? Not a technical savvy person so please be gentle with me.

Check this site out for update options. You should be able to run some relatively large SATA drives without a problem.
