Its used to evaluate variables at that point whilst printing. ie if formula is placed in group header it is evaluated every time that group header is printed.
If it was whilereadingrecords it would only evaluate once.
Crystal does 2 or 3 passes of the data while it is processing the report. You can control when a formula is evaluated.
I'm not sure you can even do this in MS-Access. This is one of the reasons Crystal is a superior reporting tool. If it's an important formula you might find it can't be calculated in MS-Access.
