i've got a little mysql database going for the first time in a LONG time. two questions.

1) #1170 - BLOB column 'body' used in key specification without a key length
is a responce i get when i try to make a column that i want to have contain some news entries. the type is blob, i put in 500 0 as a lenth just because i didnt know any better, and everything else is blank.

2) could you reccomend a book to me for mysql databases, so i dont bring noob questions like this to the table all the time? thanks

You have to specify the number of bytes, up to 255, that will be included in the index for blob and text columns. See the MySQL online manual on CREATE INDEX for more information:
I got started with MySQL, by Paul Dubois (published by New Riders Press).
