Posting this for a friend who's not on Tek-Tips... Her family is in the textile manufacturing business, basically the work flow can be described as follow:

Concept / Original Design -> Sample Request -> Procure Material -> Sample Made (idea dropped, or changes made, or approved) -> Costing / Quotation -> Official PO -> Procure Material / Material Sent to Factories -> Production -> QC / Shipping Estimate -> Shipping Estimate Approved by Buyer -> Final QC / Packaging -> Shipping -> Invoice -> Payment

Pretty standard stuff really... Right now they're using a mix of Win98, 2K, NT, and XP, mostly just emailing and some Excel worksheets. Old quotations and POs are stored on paper and/or computer. They are looking for a software that can keep track of current projects, as well as DBs that can store their material inventory, old sample info, quotations, POs, etc.

I know I am probably not giving you guys all the details, so feel free to ask about anything. Any idea what her company can use? Oh by the way, main office is in Hong Kong, with another office in Guangzhou, and 10 factories in the province.

Help is much appreciated. =) Thanks for reading all this!

Hi,

I don't know how big this company is and what their budget is for this but it would be great to create a system for them, using life-cycle principles like defined in Jackson System Development (JSD) to make a fully integrated system for them, of course using standard software where possible.

Perhaps you can advise them to hire a consultant whom will describe what is happening and whom can also make visible what information the people on all the levels need.

If the company is not very big, it is possible to create the whole system in COBOL in a PC-network environment which is very fast and efficient.

Just some thoughts and love to be involved.

Hi,
After going through the details you have provided, the company needs a a software that can gel well with the excel sheets that is being maintained by the company right now.I guess those excel sheets may be having some data manipulating functions.
Well as you correctly pointed out, there will be a need for Database which will be required for storing the company specific information.
But apart from storing data, company requires to analyse the data stored in the database which may be the case in the your friend's company too.Though this is not clear from your description.
The type of database will depend upon the size of data being handled. For a medium sized data, the company can go far application(using MS office).More can be said if the requirements are made clear.
Thanks and Regards
