Hi All!

One of my users has an application that uses a digitizer pen. The window loses focus quite frequently, requiring him to click on the window to make it active. I was wondering if there is a service in the background causing this. Can anyone tell me what the minimum services are for W2K to run?

Thanks,
Mat

Minimum Services depends on what type of network you are running. What do you mean loses focus? Does it go black? Please let us (Tek-tips members) know if the solutions we provide are helpful to you. Not only do they help you but they may help others.

It becomes the inactive window. So he has to click on the title bar or whatever you want to call it, so that the window using the digitizer is active. It doesn't shut down or anything it just needs to be clicked so he can keep making changes. Network, really just a p2p TCP/IP, netbeui...that sort of thing. The services currently running are.

Winlogon.exe
taskmgr.exe
System Idle Process
System
Svchost.exe (x2)
spoolsv.exe
smss.exe
services.exe
regsvc.exe
PELMICED.EXE
MSTask.exe
Isass.exe
iexplorer.exe
Explorer.exe
csrss.exe
AUTOCHK.EXE

thanks

Also see if you can make the window using the digitizer is maximized or Full Screen if possible. -md

It is running at full screen maddogtech... Good suggestion though...!

There is a registry hack in NT4 that makes the window over which the cursor is hovering the active window. There is more than likely an equivalent in 2000.
If your user has enabled this type of setting and uses either the pen to highlight the active window with the mouse positioned elsewhere, either device can still deactivate the window. This means that the slightest input from the mouse if not placed over the pen input window will change it's (the window's) state to inactive. I've seen this happen when someone opens a door or window in the room if the user has a high sensitivity setting on the mouse.

Of course if they don't have this cursor position sensitivity switch set, then that's my theory blown ! Ian

"IF" is not a word it's a way of life

there is a program, Pelmiced, and it will sometimes start with the computer and stick the mouse in the box without letting it move out side the box. It is not in the start up program, how can I stop that from happening without having to use alt-ctl-del to close it everytime?

Services are not the same as programs starting up. Go to START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL and go to the ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS icon. Next go to services (Long way I know). Now tell me WHICH services have the AUTOMATIC listed by it. I can help you get rid of some services that come up that most Peer to Peer networks have no need for.

That MSCONFIG for Win2k is awseome though. James Collins

the only tasks you want to keep running are:
system idle process
system
smss.exe
winlogon.exe
csrss.exe
services.exe
isass.exe
taskmgr.exe
regsvc.exe
mstask.exe
explorer.exe

all other applications running can be closed. ater that, open your digitizer and hope for the best s-)
