I administer a network with about 16 remote sites (hub and spoke). Most sites are on our frame network; a couple VPN through an ISP's DSL router. We recently installed a PIX firewall and the other VPN sites are connecting fine.

My question is which Cisco router do I need to purchase to set up another VPN. Our ISP is giving one site a connection to their local loop at close-to DSL prices. We then need to set up the VPN to our frame network.

We have 1604s (most IOS 11.2, some IOS 12)in most sites, and a 3620 (IOS 11.2) at the HQ. I've been told that some of the low end models might not allow VPN traffic. Is that a function of the router or IOS? Can anyone supply a URL for any Cisco documentation?

TIA,

If you're doing a site-to-site VPN, your routers need to have IOS 12.0T or later. Site-to-site VPNs include: PIX to Router, PIX to PIX, PIX to VPN Concentrator, etc.

Check out the PIX documentation for version 6.0, see the IPSEC guide.
