Which Online Backup Service???

Hello,

Now that the price has dropped, I am considering adding Online Backup to my regimen of SBS backup, ASR, File Copy backup, and DVD archiving. My questions:

Is there a standout company for this? I have been looking into iDrive at $4.95/month ($49.95/year) for 150GB.

Should the software client live on the SBS machine or one of the clients? I used Mozy for a personal machine and it caused some instability at first, so I am reluctant to install ANYTHING on the whistle-clean server. iDrive does have the option of backing up mapped drives, which is where all the pertinent data lies.

It's probably one of the most expensive, but I use Evault. I would highly recommend doing some researh, especially if you are backing up SQL, Exchange or other databases.

Since I maintain multiple servers at multiple sites, one of the nice features with Evault is that I can do backups/restore jobs for all the servers from their Web Central Control. Some of the other services, you have to run the jobs from the server itself.

Some of the other companies I looked into were US Data Trust and iBackup.

Thanks for the reply. iDrive is owned by iBackup, it is their entry into the consumer backup market. That's the service I am auditioning with their "free 2GB" model.

Disaster recovery is not necessary; that's what SBS backup and offsite ASR is for. I have a small network and company (10 users) so rebuilding the AD is not a daunting task. What IS important would be restoring the Exchange store (which resides on the data array) and the files (mostly Excel Spreadsheets). At this time we are not running any SQL databases except Sharepoint as a SQL instance, and that's more for fun than actual use.

So, basically it's a file & Exchange server, I'm a part-time Admin, and I'm trying to keep costs down, that's why the $50/year plan interests me. I just loaded the iDrive client on a client machine (I'm paranoid!) to see how it does, I am afraid to load any extraneous software on the SBS box without getting a blessing from the Tek-tips gods.

This is my research, there are so many knowledgeable folks here I know I can count on their (and your) guidance.

Have you taken a look at MozyPro (

It's what I recommend to my clients. Mozy is owned by EMC, a well known and stable storage technology company. MozyPro is only $3.95/mo + $0.50/GB

A pretty good deal.

Thanks for the reply. My research into online backups has Mozy as one of the better companies, but like I said I am reluctant to install their client on my server, due to instability I experienced on my laptop when I configured their free service. Nowhere was this documented as happening to anyone else but I'm still a little leery. I realize MozyPro is a different animal, so maybe I'll give it a shot.
