Which Java Application server to choose?

Hi,

I'm in the process of deciding which java application server to choose for my organisation, which runs just small to medium sized intranet apps.

Since Apache Tomcat is free, I'm tempted to just use that. Can anyone who has used Tomcat and other smaller application servers like JRun please explain what are Tomcat's shortcomings? i.e, why would one spend several thousand $$ on an app server when you can get Tomcat for free? Does Tomcat just have a less-than-user-friendly user interface, or does it really have its shortcomings with regards to its features and capabilities.

Would appreciate any advice offered. Thanks a bunch!

Tomcat isn't a high volume sever and it doesn't support EJB. Mike Wills

Tomcat is a great servlet container, but as Koldark
pointed out, it does not support EJBs. However, you
can get JBoss which does support EJBs for free with
embedded Tomcat. You can learn more about JBoss at

http://www.jboss.org.

We've had it running for months
at a time without restarting and no problems. It is
a very stable EJB platform.
