It works... I've used it. I've also used Skype.
Web cam and live messenger usually works fine.

Windows live messenger in my opinion is the Easiest. It also has the added bonus of Remote Assistance should you ever need to use it. It is also compatible with some other messenger type programs such as Yahoo.
Don't ask me how secure or safe these programs are, that might be another whole topic altogether.
