I want to make a home NT4 network with 3 or 4 PC connections. What is NETBEUO (sp??) and direct cable connect?

And also as newbie, which is better, a HUB or a ROUTER?

Thanks

Hello,

Well my recomendation would be if you have an internet connection that you are trying to share aka DSL/Cable is to purchase a router/home gateway.

I use a 3com 3c510 at home, it also includes a print server.

I try to stay away from hubs when the internet is involved because I like to split bandwith evenly.

NetBeui is a protocol that is NOT-ROUTABLE that is used for file/print sharing on Windows networks.

TCP/IP is the protocol that you will need to use to connect to the internet.

The link for the 3com gateway:

Also check out Linksys, Siemens, SMC products.

Good Luck, let me know if I can help _______________________________________

Actually, a hub will pool connections between computers. If you're spending the dough to get a hub, get a switch - they are 'smart hubs' that remember the connections that are used to get where the network needs to go.

A DSL Router will make you, in effect, 'invisible' to others on the internet. I'd recommend a firewall, but the routers are nice too. If you are getting a Cable Modem, or DSL modem, take a look at the Linksys 8 port switch (they also make a 4 port switch) combo with router. The part # is BEFSR41 for the 4 port, and BEFSR81 for the 8 port. Take a look around the internet for the descriptions, and price them out on pricewatch.com.
