Squirrelmail has an active development team and a user community that is actively developing module plug-ins to enhance the product. I've never tried sqwebmail, I'm sure its a find product too. I would check out the security archives around the net to find out which products have a good track record for low numbers of vulnerabilities or rapid repair rates. That could be your more important criteria.
