Hello people.

I need some honest advice.

I am looking to spend around £70 Tops for a Internal 80 gig HD.

I have seen a few, but needed to know which one I should go for. The following HD's have been found at pricerunner.co.uk.

IBM Deskstar 180GXP 80GB/IDE100/OEM
best price £56.13

Western Digital Caviar 80GB/IDE100/OEM
best price £57.18

Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 80GB/IDE100
best price £58.74

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 80GB/IDE133
best price £59.34

Western Digital Caviar SE 80GB/IDE100/OEM
best price £64.92

Which one is the better one?

I am only looking for a 80 gig HD. nothing big or small. Looking for a good price effective solution.

Thanks..

J

I personally would go with the Maxtor just because I have amazing luck with Maxtor in the past and the present.

I am a WD man all the way. Always have been and always will be (until I get the shaft from them).

Good luck in choosing!

Cheers!

I have just been making the same decision for a 120GB disk.

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9, Seagate Barracuda and Western Digital Caviar were on my short list.

All advice I received knocked out the Seagate. (In agreement with previous two posts).

In the end, I chose Maxtor as it was recommended by a colleague as his "personal" preference after some years building machines.

I am awaiting delivery so I hope the advice is good!

Well the seagate is the quietest and most reliable of the four makes you have chosen, so if data integrety is your priority then Seagate is the best (but not the quickest)
This is our observation after selling all the above makes (fewest returns on seagate drives against amount sold)
The WD special edition is the quickest with it's 8meg cache
The Maxtor Diamond plus 9, the normal Western Digital (2meg cache) and IBM's 180GXP are all very similar (maybe the IBM GXP180 is marginally the quicker of the bunch)
So fastest speed:
WD SE (8mb cache)
IBM GXP180
Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 9
WD 2mb cache
Seagate Barracuda 7200.7

Reliability:
Seagate Barracuda V & the new 7200.7 (by far)
Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 9
Both the WD's
Then IBM Deskstar GXP180

Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.

Personally, I like the WD SE with 8MB of cache. It's a great all around performer and decent reliability. However, Maxtor DiamondMax drives are tempting too. They don't always score the highest, but they NEVER score the lowest either. Can't go wrong with either one.

When it comes to IDE, Seagate just isn't that dominant. They specialize in the SCSI interface, and for some reason, performance just didn't translate over to IDE. They are rock solid though, but not the best pick out of the bunch.

IBM is a toss-up. The 75GXP models that were released several years ago took a lot of heat for failing prematurely (having about 1/3 of the average life span). IBM "supposively" rectified this in their newer line models like the 120GXP and 180GXP, but a lot of people have decided to keep their distance for a while.

Good Luck in choosing!
