Hi there, I am just experimenting with SNMP (learning it actually) and was wondering which SNMP Manager I should use that's free and which SNMP Agent I should use? I downloaded an SNMP agent called Net-SNMP and I'm trying to look for a free SNMP Manager for Solaris 8. Any ideas?

THanks for any help!

From Solaris 2.6 and above the Solstice Enterprise Agents come bundled with the Operating System. In order to check these daemons from running do the following.

# ps -ef | grep snmp
root 236 1 0 May 19 ? 0:00 /usr/lib/snmp/snmpdx -y -c /etc/snmp/conf
root 244 1 0 May 19 ? 0:00 /usr/lib/dmi/snmpXdmid -s tintin
root 6438 6391 0 17:13:55 pts/8 0:00 grep snmp

For more information regarding SNMP, go to:

For Solaris 2.5.1, 2.6 and 2.7 the Sun supported snmp agent can be downloaded free from the following location:

Both the Solstice Enterprise Agent Runtime and the SDK are available:

- The runtime version contains the following packages: SUNWmibii,SUNWsacom, SUNWsadmi, and SUNWsasnm.

- The SDK version contains the runtime packages plus SUNWsasdk (for agent development) for 2.5.1 and 2.6. The runtime packages are included with the 2.7 OS.

After installing SEA 1.0.3, refer to the patch matrix on:
for the latest patches.

If DMI is not used, disable it by killing the following processes:

% ps -ef|grep dmi

/usr/lib/dmi/snmpXdmid -s ice
/usr/lib/dmi/dmispd

Then:

% cd /etc/rc3.d
% mv S77dmi s77dmi

2)For Solaris 2.4 and lower or SunOS 4.x, download the files from a public server's web site such as the following:
ftp://zippy.telcom.arizona.edu/pub/snm/patches/snmpd2.2.3/

Uncompress and un-tar the snmpd2.2.3.tar.Z file and follow the directions in the Readme to install it.

****Please be aware that this software is NOT SUPPORTED by Sun Enterprise Services.
Note: SNMP mib version 2.2.3 will work with ANY snmp manager application.

What I'm planning to do is set up a server that is the NMS and then have a device with an SNMP agent so that it can send traps to the NMS. I just want to see how it works. So, Solaris has its own built in manager and agent? From your response, are you just talking about the agent?

Thanks.
