I'm having one hard time getting my Cisco 7940 phones to work with my Dell PowerConnect 5224 switch.

Am I in the right forum?

On a Cisco 3524XL, the following works like a champ:

interface FastEthernet0/1
description connection to IP Phone
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport trunk native vlan 3
switchport mode trunk
switchport voice vlan 10
no ip address
spanning-tree portfast

What is the equivalent on the Dell PowerConnect? I can't even seem to get the trunking right.

Help?

I can tell you from my experience that the Dell switches are totally inferior to Cisco. Sit down kids and let me tell you a story ....

My buddy calls me up asking what I thought of Dell switches. My reply, "Buy a used Cisco switch off of Ebay. You'll be happier". Apparently Dell gave him an awesome deal. Sommething like 50% off to take the Dell Switch. He was happy. A few days later he installed the switch and during the middle of the day, it decides to reboot itself. This happens everyday. Dell says they don't have a clue and that this necver happens. But I know better. I have many friends who went through the same thing. My suggestion to you is....

Dump your Dell switch and a get a used Cisco switch (2950 maybe?) off of ebay for about the same price.

It is what it is!!

Uh, thanks for the advice. But, I don't have a choice right now and need to make this Dell switch work with my 7940/7960 phones.

I wish I could be single vendor, but we don't have that option right now.

Anyone have ideas on getting this working?

Well, dell switches don't support CDP to my knowledge, so you'll have to manually set all of your phones for the voice vlan.

You have to setup an 802.1q trunk port on the switch..

Buckweet--- it was the CDP thing. I had a brain fart. I had to manually change the admin vlan to 10 and in return, that set the operational vlan to 10. 15 seconds later, I have what I need.

Thanks for that. Star for you.

Hopefully you don't have to do too many of those.. What a pain..

No, this is for a remote office. 3 phones. No big deal. If it was at central, I wouldn't even consider Dell :)
