Planning to completely reloading the computer. Anyone's thoughts on device/controller hookups would be appreciated.

I was considering the following:

Master IDE
Primary - 200gb Maxtor (new drive)
Slave - cd writer (not used a lot)

Secondary IDE
Primary - DVD writer
Slave - 60 gb Western digital

Thanks

NEVER NEVER NEVER make your CD-rom/DVD a master and your HD a slave, UNLESS you want to make the hd as slow as the CD_rom/DVD. HD are ALWAYS masters.

Also, I like to keep my hd's togather. Put the 200 gb HD as master, the 60 GB as slave. You can then play around wih teh slave/master fopr the cd/dvd. OR better yet use cable select.

Just wanted to note that it doesn't matter whether a device is master or slave on a cable, except when it comes to boot order. Master devices are detected first, then slave. That's also the order in which drive letters are assigned. Speed is not a factor here, as long as your system was made after 1998 when IDT mode was available.

I do agree with pweeger though that keeping your hard drives together on one channel is usually the optimum setup when you have 4 devices. The rule of thumb to remember is that transfers between any two devices are "quicker" if they are on opposite IDE channels.

There have been many recent threads on the topic. Try some of these:
