Which combinations among VPN HW server & VPN SW client

Which combinations are aceptable among VPN HW server (fixed or dedicated box) and VPN SW (running on a computer).

Virtually every VPN HW manufacturer have their own proprietary VPN application (cisco, Avaya, fortinet, etc), but what could one do in the linksys case.

First Netgear FVS318 is a great route and I use them, very easy to config. Now are you looking to connect two sites up?

my plan is to connect ip extensions (hard / soft phones) to the central PBX which is attached to a VPN server box.

Take a look at the Netgear it is a nice router for the cost.
