I am really frustrated trying to do any shell things on 2000 or XP. The two biggest frustrations are:

- file/directory names with spaces: never seem to be able to consistently type them in acceptably (quotes? single? double?)

- command or filename completion

Are there any ways to improve the built-in command shell? Are there alternative command shells available?

Thanks!

Well both windows 2000 and XP supports cut and paste in the shell so its possible to mark a file name and then paste it saving problem of mistyping the file.

Also you can use filename completion. If you download the powertoys (tweak ui) you can set what keys to press for filename and dirname completion.

There is also a way to set filename/dirname through changing a req key but its easier using the tweak ui tool.
