Where in general do applications go? e.g., i am installing GCC, which should be accessible by most users. Where does one locate the top directory? /bin, or /usr, or somewhere in /home/<someGeneralDir?

Is there some convention to follow?

thx

PS, is there some doc on how to maintain a proper directory structure? I wouldnt want to make a mess...

thanx, in the meantime i figured out i'd use /usr/local/pkgs
for complete packages.

How are you installing GCC? If it's via RPM package, I'd just let it install in the default location.
